Innovation Management Case
Montell & Partners supported a world leading global producer of home appliances to implement a new innovation process and product portfolio management solution. The customers main drivers with the project was to become more coordinated in its product development initiatives and reduce lead time to market, as well as improve prioritization of innovation investments.
Blueprint
The initial phase of the assignment covered an analysis of the current new product development (NPD) processes and system landscape. The new solution was planned to support the complete set of NPD processes, and also to replace a number of outdated and redundant existing systems. The analysis resulted in an implementation plan, and a process blueprint with detailed definition of all data parameters characterizing projects in each sub process and how the data flows between the processes. A specification of all reports needed from the system was also produced.
Implementation
The solution was based on a product suite from an international supplier of software for process management and decision support. As part of the project, the system was configured and adopted to the specific needs of the customer. The underlying data structure was implemented, and reports supporting both day to day project work as well as top management review and decision making was developed. In cooperation with the customers IT and support organizations, the solution was installed and tested prior to roll out.
Roll out
The project supported in the initial roll out covering one major division. “Train the trainer” sessions were held, and support and administrative training sessions were carried out. Training in report development was also held to prepare the organization in handling new report needs internally.
The reception of the solution from the users has been very enthusiastic. Some of the key benefits achieved by the project are:
- Visibility of project information
- Process best practices with templates, deliverables and decisions
- Alignment between innovation strategies and day-to-day development work
- Collaboration between teams working on concepts and new product development
- Effective prioritization of investments in new products
